Physical Education Section

 

Role :

The Section is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating PE programs that support students' physical, mental and social growth through structured physical activities and health education. The Cadre also advises on and is responsible for the implementation of Government Policy in all aspect of Physical Education and Sports in all sectors and at different levels within the Ministry of Education.

The Cadre focuses on the holistic development of students, aiming to build physical and mental health, encourage teamwork, and instill healthy lifestyle habits, the PE Cadre contributes to students' readiness to learn and to engage.

By instilling early habits of practicing a physical activity, the cadre helps prevent lifestyle diseases and promotes well-being beyond school.


Responsibilities :

  •  · Curriculum Development and Instruction: Developing age-appropriate PE curriculum that meet educational standards and accommodate diverse student needs and fitness levels.
  •  · Physical Fitness Assessments: Conducting regular fitness assessments to gauge students' progress and tailor programs to address varying needs.
  •  · Student Engagement and Motivation: Implementing activities that motivate students foster teamwork, and build a positive attitude towards physical fitness.
  •  · Resource Management: Ensuring access to quality equipment and facilities while adhering to safety standards.
  •  · Professional Development: Engaging in continuous training to adopt best practices and new techniques in PE and Sports Science. Providing training to Educators Secondary (PE), equipping them 
  •       with the knowledge of modern  teaching methods and student-centered  learning approaches.
  •  ·​ Collaboration with Health Experts: Partnering with healthcare professionals to support students' mental health and wellness, addressing stress and promoting resilience through physical activity.

Objectives:

The primary objectives of the PE Cadre align with the broader goals of education by supporting students' physical and mental development and preparing them for lifelong wellness. These objectives are:

  •   · Enhancing Physical Fitness and Health Literacy: Educate students on the importance of physical activity, balanced nutrition, and overall wellness to develop informed, health conscious individuals.
  •   · Improving Academic Performance: Leverage physical activity to enhance cognitive function, memory and focus, which contribute to better academic outcome.
  •   · Building Social and Emotional Skills: Encourage teamwork, discipline, and resilience, essential life skills that extend beyond the classroom.
  •   · Developing School Spirit and Engagement: Use sports and physical activities as tools to build a strong sense of community, school spirit and belonging.
  •   · ​Preventing Lifestyle Diseases: Establish foundational habits that reduce the risk of lifestyle related diseases, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

 

Specific Projects :

                                                                                                  Primary:

  •   · Natation Scolaire: To instill swimming skills and raise awareness of safety around water and the importance of drowning prevention for Grade 4 pupils around the island.
  •   ·  After Schools Sports & Fitness Programme (ASSFP): To engage pupils of Grade 4-6 in a well-structured environment for the safe practice of physical activities after school hours.

  •                                                                                                  Secondary:

  · After Schools Sports & Fitness Programme (ASSFP): To engage students of Grade 7 in a well-structured environment for the safe practice of physical activities after school hours.

  · PE is also offered as an optional subject at Grade 10 (O-level) and Grade 12 (AS-level) Paper1 – Theory is externally assessed by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) 

       and Paper 2 – Coursework is internally assessed by Mauritius Examination Syndicate and externally moderated by CAIE.

  · Outdoor Education: To empower students of Grade 12 to safe practice of land and water- based activities such as trail, orienteering, cycling, dragon boat, kayak and standup paddle.

  · Duke of Edinburg International Award: To prepare students of Grade 9-13 on activities such as social/voluntary work, physical activity, camp craft, leadership and civic education.

     Each participant receives an international certificate as  per the level they have entered:  Bronze,  Silver and Gold respectively.  

  · Inter College Competitions: Organisation of sports competitions by the Mauritius Secondary Schools Sports Association (MSSSA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and 

     Ministry of Education and  at Regional and National Levels in  several sports disciplines.
