Education

The current focus: Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Education for Sustainable Development

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is an inter-governmental commitment and “a plan of action for People, Planet and Prosperity”. The SDGs Agenda 2030 was adopted in 2015 and the international community recognised that education was essential for all its 17 goals. UNESCO as the specialised agency for education, was entrusted to lead the Education 2030 agenda with its partners.

Within the comprehensive 2030 Agenda education is essentially articulated as a stand-alone goal: SDG4. SDG 4 captures the role of education to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030, with its 7 outcome targets and 3 means of implementation.

The main responsibility for implementing the agenda lies with governments, with UNESCO and partners providing support through coordinated policy advice, technical assistance, capacity development, and monitoring of progress at global, regional and national levels.
