Public Higher Education Institutions

The Mauritian public higher education sector c​urrently hosts 6 main public higher education institutions (HEIs), namely:

  1. University of Mauritius (UOM)
  2. University of Technology Mauritius (UTM)
  3. Université des Mascareignes (UdM)
  4. Open University of Mauritius (OUM)
  5. Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI)​
  6. Rabindranath Tagore Institute (RTI)

There are 3 other public HEIs operating in specialised areas:

  1. Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE)
  2. Mauritius Institute of Health (MIH)
  3.  Academy of Design and Innovation 

The Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD) offers courses at the TVET level while Polytechnics Mauritius Ltd (PML)​ offers diploma programmes at upper TVET level.

The Mauritius Higher Education Desk (HiEdu Desk), is a one-stop shop for Higher Education in Mauritius. It operates within the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology. The HiEdu desk acts as a focal point for the dissemination of information and provision of advice to both local and international students on higher education opportunities in Mauritius, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), courses available, student welfare and counselling, availability of accommodation, cost of living, visa procedures, and other relevant information falling under its ambit.

HiEdu desk inter-alia therefore: 

​1. ​enhances the visibility of Mauritius as a prime destination for Higher Education.
​2. ​guides both local and international students on higher education opportunities in Mauritius
​3. ​provides information about student welfare and well-being in Mauritius; and promotes student interaction for integration and cultural awareness.
